First, let’s discuss what makes Playa del Carmen different than the rest of the world. Scuba diving in Playa del Carmen is truly a unique experience for a myriad of reasons.

What makes diving in Playa del Carmen unique?
The answer to that question is: The Mesoamerican Reef & Cenotes
The Mesoamerican Reef runs from Florida to Honduras. Playa del Carmen is right in the middle of this massive barrier reef. It is both the second-longest and second-oldest barrier reef system in the world. The Mesoamerican Reef contains 65 individual coral species and over 500 different species of fish!
Cenotes are natural sinkholes formed by the collapse of limestone bedrock, exposing underground water-filled caves. These formations are prevalent in Mexico’s Yucatán Peninsula and held great spiritual significance for the ancient Maya civilization. Today, divers explore an extensive network of underground rivers and caves that are open to recreational diving. While cave diving can be found in other parts of the world, the Riviera Maya provides unique opportunities and conditions for this one-of-a-kind experience.

What are the reefs like in Playa del Carmen?
Most dive destinations require a boat ride to get to the good dive sites. Even though it is a barrier reef, the reef is often still quite a way from shore. Here, in Playa del Carmen, the reef sits only 3 minutes away from the shore, making boat rides incredibly short and comfortable.
Of course, the ride could be up to 30 minutes depending on where you are coming from and where you are going, but you never have to traverse high seas in big waves to get to the best dive sites.
Playa also has unique underwater topography. Shallow dive sites are bursting with colors, corals, and schools of fish. Deeper dive sites offer larger animals such as nurse sharks, bull sharks (in season), and turtles. Some dive sites are flat, drift dives. Others are walls with a top reef. Macro life, such as seahorses, pipefish, and even nudibranch, can be found here.

What can you see while diving in Playa del Carmen?
On most dives, we see: Turtles, sting rays, moray eels, lobsters and crabs, and tropical Caribbean reef fish such as butterfly fish, snappers, parrotfish, angel fish, lionfish, etc.
With a bit of luck, we see: Squid, octopus, nurse sharks, and eagle rays.
On rare occasions, we see: Seahorses, other shark species, and nudibranch.

Why do people choose Playa del Carmen over Cancun, Cozumel, or Tulum?
The answer is simple: the city.
Playa del Carmen is centrally located between Cancun, Tulum, and Cozumel. This gives divers the best opportunity to see everything the area has to offer, in the water and on land. All three locations have international airports, so you can get to Playa very easily.
What’s the benefit of staying in Playa compared to the other locations? You can easily move among all 3 and experience the best of each place without changing accommodations or overorganizing your trip.
Why would you want to go to Cancun?
Cancun itself doesn’t offer much to tourists except the beachfront beach clubs. We have plenty of those in Playa that are just as good – or better. The unique thing in Cancun is Isla Mujeres. Isla Mujeres offers very similar diving to Playa del Carmen. The only thing Isla Mujeres has over Playa is the world-famous underwater museum. If this is truly on your trip’s itinerary, you can easily add it in as a day trip to the island from Playa del Carmen.
Why would you want to go to Cozumel?
It’s no secret that Cozumel is rated one of the best places to go for diving in the Caribbean – maybe the world. With some of the best visibility I’ve ever experienced, massive walls, towering coral structures, and strong currents, Cozumel is a dive destination worth the trip. Luckily for those of us in Playa del Carmen, Cozumel is only a short ferry ride away. Some dive shops even offer a direct boat from downtown Playa straight to the Cozumel dive site!
Why would you want to go to Tulum?
Tulum is incredibly unique in its diving. While Tulum does offer ocean dives, its main focus is cenotes. Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes deep in the jungle. The whole Yucatan Peninsula is filled with cenotes, but the section of jungle between Playa del Carmen and Tulum offers the greatest volume of cenotes suitable for recreational divers in the Riviera Maya. This means that you are just as close to some of the cenote dives if you stay in Playa as if you stayed in Tulum. Is scuba diving in Playa del Carmen worth it?
In my opinion – yes!
Playa del Carmen offers the same reef life seen in most of the Caribbean in an incredibly comfortable environment.
Not only are the reefs beautiful, but it’s the perfect place to stay if you want to see everything the Riviera Maya has to offer!
With so many dive sites in such proximity, it’s impossible for divers to get bored with the underwater world here. Salt water, fresh water, caves, or coral – Playa del Carmen really has something for every type of diver.
